Biography

Nikola Kotkov was born on December 9, 1938, in Sofia, Bulgaria, during a pivotal time in his nation’s history. From his earliest years in the capital, he would go on to pursue a passion that captured the hearts of many—the beautiful game of football. His career as a footballer became his life’s work, representing the athletic spirit and dedication that defined him throughout his years.

Though his life was cut tragically short, Kotkov’s memory endures as part of Bulgaria’s sporting heritage. On June 30, 1971, he died in a traffic collision near Vitinya Pass, an unexpected loss that took him from the world far too soon at just thirty-two years old. His contributions to Bulgarian football, though his career spanned a transformative era for the sport in Eastern Europe, left an imprint on those who knew him and followed the game.

Nikola Kotkov was laid to rest at Central Sofia Cemetery in his native city, where he remains remembered. His life, though brief, reflected the passion and commitment he brought to football and to his country.
