Biography

Nikolai Kondratiev revolutionized how economists understood cyclical patterns in capitalism, earning international recognition for his groundbreaking theories on long-wave economic cycles. Born in 1892 during Russia’s turbulent transformation, the brilliant Soviet economist became a towering intellectual figure whose work shaped twentieth-century economic thought. His rigorous analysis of boom-and-bust patterns challenged conventional wisdom and established him as one of his generation’s most influential economic theorists.

Kondratiev’s career flourished during the Soviet Union’s formative decades, a period of extraordinary intellectual ferment. Yet his independent thinking and scholarly rigor ultimately made him a target during Stalin’s purges. On September 17, 1938, he was executed by firing squad at the Kommunarka shooting ground, joining countless intellectuals and professionals erased during that dark chapter. His body was interred at the same location in Sosenskoye.

Though his life was brutally cut short at forty-six, Kondratiev’s economic theories outlived the regime that destroyed him. His concepts continue influencing economists worldwide, cementing his place as a visionary whose ideas transcended the tragedy of his death.
