Biography

Noe Zhordania was the visionary who steered Georgia toward independence during one of history’s most turbulent moments. Born in 1868 in Lanchkhuti during the Caucasus’s political upheaval, he emerged as the Democratic Republic of Georgia’s chairman—a position that made him the nation’s defining statesman. Zhordania embodied Social Democratic ideals during an era when such convictions demanded courage, championing both democratic governance and Georgian self-determination against formidable odds.

His decades of political leadership cemented his status among the Caucasus’s most influential figures, a man who refused to compromise on his vision for an independent Georgia. Though Georgia’s path proved treacherous through the twentieth century’s geopolitical storms, Zhordania’s unwavering commitment to democratic principles left an indelible mark on the nation’s identity and aspirations.

In his final chapter, Zhordania spent years in Parisian exile, far from the homeland he’d fought to liberate. He died there in January 1953, just days shy of his eighty-fifth birthday, and was buried at Leuville Cemetery. His legacy endures as a testament to principled leadership and the enduring Georgian spirit.
