Óscar Humberto Mejía Víctores 1930 – 2016
Biography
Óscar Humberto Mejía Víctores rose through Guatemala’s political ranks to become president, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s modern history. Born in Guatemala City in 1930, he spent his entire life in the capital, witnessing and shaping some of the country’s most pivotal moments. His ascent to the presidency positioned him as a key figure in Guatemalan governance during a transformative era.
Mejía Víctores’s nearly eight-decade life embodied Guatemala’s turbulent political landscape. As his influence waned, Parkinson’s disease gradually claimed his vitality, a fitting metaphor for the inevitable passage even powerful figures face. He died in February 2016 in the city where he was born, laid to rest at Guatemala City General Cemetery—a full-circle ending for a man whose entire existence remained rooted in the capital he called home.
