Pasquale Malipiero 1392 – 1462
Biography
Pasquale Malipiero was born on January 1, 1392, in Venice, during a period of remarkable flourishing for the Venetian Republic. He would come of age in one of Europe’s most influential city-states, a place where merchant families wielded considerable power and prestige. The Malipiero family, established among Venice’s prominent patrician class, provided him with both the standing and opportunity to pursue a life of public service.
Throughout his life, Malipiero ascended to the highest office available to a Venetian citizen—that of Doge. His leadership occurred during the early fifteenth century, a transformative era for Venice as it continued to consolidate its maritime dominance and expand its influence across the Mediterranean and beyond. As doge, he would have been responsible for navigating the complex political, military, and commercial challenges that defined Venetian governance during this dynamic period.
Malipiero spent his entire life in his native city, and there he remained after his death on May 7, 1462, at the age of seventy. His commitment to Venice was honored through his interment at the Monument to the Doge Pasquale Malipiero, a lasting tribute to his service and significance within the republic’s storied history.
