Biography

Czech composer Pavel Haas emerged from Brno’s vibrant early-twentieth-century musical scene as a distinctive voice in Central European classical music. Born in 1899, he crafted compositions that wove together the rich threads of Czech musical tradition with his own modernist sensibility, earning recognition across Europe for work that felt both rooted in heritage and boldly contemporary.

Haas’s ascending career was brutally interrupted by the Holocaust. Deported to Auschwitz II-Birkenau, he was murdered on October 17, 1944, at just forty-five years old. His death represented an immeasurable cultural loss—a composer silenced at the height of his creative powers. Today, Haas stands as both an artistic legacy and a sobering reminder of the twentieth century’s capacity for destruction, his surviving compositions a testament to talent the world was denied.
