Biography

Pérotin was the sonic architect of medieval Paris—a visionary composer who transformed how music itself could sound. Working in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, he revolutionized polyphonic music, layering multiple vocal lines into shimmering, complex harmonies that had never been heard before. At a time when most music was single-voiced chant, Pérotin dared to weave together four, sometimes even more independent melodies, creating an entirely new sonic language that would influence centuries of European composers.

Born into Paris’s golden age of intellectual explosion, Pérotin emerged as the city’s most innovative musical mind during the High Middle Ages. Working with the revolutionary tool of formal musical notation—still in its infancy—he essentially wrote the rulebook for polyphonic composition. His techniques weren’t just technical breakthroughs; they were acts of artistic boldness that pushed medieval music toward the Renaissance and beyond.

Pérotin lived seventy-five years, an extraordinary span for his era, dying in 1230. While history forgot the details of his death and burial, it never forgot his music. His legacy stands as proof that genius doesn’t require fame during one’s lifetime—only the courage to imagine what no one has heard before.
