Biography

Peter Dodds McCormick was born on January 28, 1833, in Port Glasgow, Scotland, before making his way to Australia where he would build a meaningful life as an educator and creative artist. His journey from his Scottish birthplace to the Australian colonies reflected the spirit of migration and opportunity that characterized the nineteenth century. McCormick dedicated much of his life to teaching, shaping young minds and contributing to the development of education in his adopted country.

Beyond his work in the classroom, McCormick left a lasting mark through his talents as a songwriter. His creative pursuits added cultural richness to the communities he served, blending his passion for music and composition with his commitment to education. These dual roles—as both educator and artist—defined much of his professional identity and legacy.

McCormick spent his final years in Sydney, where he remained active until his death on October 30, 1916, at the age of eighty-three. He was laid to rest at Rookwood Necropolis in Cumberland, one of Australia’s most significant burial grounds. His life spanned more than eight decades of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a period of remarkable change and growth in Australia and the world beyond.
