Biography

Philibert of Chalon was a French nobleman whose life spanned a significant period in European history. Born in Lons-le-Saunier, a town in the Jura region of eastern France, he came from a family of considerable standing. His position within the French nobility connected him to the broader aristocratic networks of his time, during an era of significant political and social change across the continent.

On August 13, 1530, Philibert’s life came to an end in Gavinana, far from his birthplace. The circumstances surrounding his death remain undocumented, leaving many details of his final years unknown. Nevertheless, his passing marked the conclusion of a life lived within the circles of French nobility during the early sixteenth century.

In keeping with the customs of his station and faith, Philibert was laid to rest at the Cordeliers church in Lons-le-Saunier, returning him to his native region for interment. This final resting place reflects both his family’s standing and the religious devotion typical of French Catholic nobility of his era. Though detailed records of his individual achievements have not survived, Philibert of Chalon remains part of the historical tapestry of French aristocracy during the Renaissance period.
