Biography

Phillip Parker King was born on January 1, 1793, on Norfolk Island, a remote outpost in the South Pacific. From these isolated beginnings, he would go on to become one of the most accomplished naval explorers of the nineteenth century. His formative years in this frontier settlement shaped his character and instilled in him a deep understanding of maritime life and exploration.

King entered the Royal Navy with distinction and dedicated his career to charting previously unknown and poorly understood coastlines. His expeditions along the Australian coast and through the waters of Patagonia in South America yielded invaluable geographic and hydrographic knowledge. These voyages represented some of the most ambitious naval surveying projects of their era, expanding European understanding of distant regions and contributing significantly to maritime charts and navigation.

Throughout his distinguished service, King earned recognition for his meticulous work and unwavering commitment to exploration. His findings helped establish safer passages and more accurate maps for future navigators and traders. After a lifetime devoted to the sea and discovery, King spent his final years in North Sydney, where he passed away on February 26, 1856, at the age of sixty-three.
