Pierre Leroux 1797 – 1871
Biography
Pierre Leroux was born on April 7, 1797, in Paris, during a transformative period in French history. He would become one of the nineteenth century’s notable French philosophers and political economists, contributing to the intellectual currents that shaped European thought during his lifetime. His work reflected the complex social and political questions that occupied progressive thinkers throughout the 1800s.
Living through decades of significant change, Leroux developed ideas that bridged philosophy and political economy, fields that were becoming increasingly important as industrialization and social reform movements gained momentum. His intellectual contributions were part of a broader conversation about the organization of society, economic justice, and the role of philosophy in addressing practical human concerns.
Leroux lived a full life in his native Paris, where he had been born and where he remained engaged with intellectual and social questions until his death on April 12, 1871. He was seventy-four years old at the time of his passing. Following his death, he was laid to rest at Montparnasse Cemetery in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, one of the city’s most distinguished burial grounds, where he remains among other notable figures of French culture and thought.
