Pierre Nord Alexis 1820 – 1910
Biography
Pierre Nord Alexis was born on August 2, 1820, in Cap-Haïtien, Haiti, during a formative period in the young nation’s history. He would go on to serve as President of Haiti, taking on leadership responsibilities during a complex era of the country’s development. His life spanned nearly nine decades, witnessing tremendous changes across the Caribbean and beyond.
Alexis spent his final years in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he died on May 1, 1910, at an advanced age. His passing marked the end of a long life lived through significant historical transformations. Rather than being interred in his native Haiti, he was laid to rest in Saint Louis Cemetery No. 2 in New Orleans, a final resting place that reflects the close historical ties between Haiti and Louisiana.
Though specific details of his presidency and major accomplishments remain to be explored through historical records, Pierre Nord Alexis stands as a figure from Haiti’s nineteenth-century leadership. His longevity and the arc of his life—from Cap-Haïtien to the United States—tell a story of resilience and endurance during a pivotal time in Caribbean history.
