Biography

Pixodarus was a distinguished satrap of Caria during the twilight of the Persian Empire, serving in this position of considerable authority from 340 to 334 BC. As satrap, he governed the coastal region of Caria in what is now southwestern Turkey, overseeing administrative, military, and economic matters on behalf of the Persian throne during a period of significant change in the eastern Mediterranean world.

His tenure as satrap coincided with the final years of Persian dominance in Asia Minor, a time when the empire faced mounting pressures and challenges to its authority. Pixodarus administered Caria from his base in Halicarnassus, the region’s principal city, where he maintained the structures of governance and collected tribute for the Persian crown.

Pixodarus passed away on January 1, 333 BC in Halicarnassus, the city he had governed. Though the specific circumstances of his death remain unrecorded, his life spanned a pivotal moment in ancient history, when the long-established Persian order was beginning to give way to new powers. His legacy endures as part of the rich administrative and political history of Caria during the classical period.
