Prince Wilhelm Karl, 2nd Duke of Urach 1864 – 1928
Biography
Born into European nobility in 1864, Prince Wilhelm Karl, 2nd Duke of Urach, inherited a prestigious title and the expectations that came with aristocratic bloodlines. But his real moment in history came when he stepped into the spotlight during one of Europe’s most turbulent periods. In 1918, as Lithuania fought for independence in the chaos following World War I, the German prince answered the call to lead the fledgling nation. His tenure as Ruler—from July to November that year—was brief but historically significant, making him a pivotal figure in Lithuania’s struggle for self-determination.
Though his time in power lasted mere months, Prince Wilhelm Karl’s leadership during Lithuania’s critical transition marked him as more than just another aristocrat coasting on inheritance. He embodied the fluid, uncertain politics of post-war Europe, when old empires crumbled and new nations clawed their way to existence. After his Lithuanian chapter closed, he retreated to the Italian Riviera, spending his final years in Rapallo before his death in 1928. He was buried at Ludwigsburg Palace, the ancestral seat of his family legacy.
