Ramsey Clark 1927 – 2021
Biography
A lawyer who traded courtroom prestige for conscience, Ramsey Clark became one of America’s most uncompromising voices for justice and peace. Born into a Texas family steeped in public service, Clark built a legal career defending the defenseless and challenging power structures he deemed corrupt. But it was his fearless activism—speaking out against war, defending political prisoners, and taking on causes others wouldn’t touch—that cemented his reputation as a moral firebrand willing to sacrifice respectability for principle.
Clark’s legacy isn’t measured in conventional success markers. He represented everyone from war protesters to political dissidents, using his legal expertise as a weapon against what he saw as systemic injustice. His voice thundered through decades of American turmoil, from Vietnam to Iraq, a consistent moral counterweight in an often compromised legal profession. Until his death in 2021, he remained based in New York, still writing, still fighting, still convinced that lawyers had an obligation to serve humanity first.
