Biography

Raoul Hausmann was a Viennese artist who refused to be confined by a single medium. Born in 1886 during Europe’s artistic ferment, he carved out a singular career spanning photography and sculpture—two disciplines he wielded with equal conviction to challenge how we see and interpret the world. His restless creative spirit made him a fixture in twentieth-century visual culture, constantly pushing against artistic boundaries and exploring what new technologies and traditional forms could reveal.

For nearly a century, Hausmann remained a pivotal figure in European modernism, working across mediums at a time when most artists picked a lane and stayed there. His dual practice in photography and sculpture positioned him at crucial artistic conversations throughout his era, as he navigated the revolutionary changes reshaping art itself. He proved that versatility wasn’t dilution—it was vision.

Hausmann spent his final years in Limoges, France, where he died in 1971 at eighty-four, closing out a life lived entirely in service to artistic innovation. His legacy endures as a testament to creative fearlessness.
