Richard Belzer 1944 – 2023

Biography

Richard Belzer proved that versatility was the ultimate comedy currency. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, this multi-hyphenate entertainer built a reputation as a sharp-tongued stand-up comic before pivoting seamlessly into dramatic television roles that showcased surprising depth. His ability to slip between laugh-out-loud humor and genuine pathos made him a rare talent—the kind of performer who could kill a comedy club one night and nail a serious scene the next.

What kept audiences coming back was Belzer’s authenticity. Whether riffing from a stage or embodying complex characters on screen, he brought an unmistakable energy—witty, irreverent, deeply human. He refused to be boxed into one lane, building a devoted following across generations who appreciated his refusal to play it safe.

When Richard Belzer died on February 19, 2023, the entertainment world lost someone who’d proven that comedy and craft weren’t mutually exclusive. His nearly eight-decade journey left an indelible mark—a reminder that the best performers are those willing to take risks and connect with audiences on their own terms.
