Richard II of England

Biography

Richard II ascended England’s throne as a child king in 1377, inheriting a crown fraught with peril. His reign became a masterclass in medieval political theatre—a young, intelligent monarch caught between his own vision for kingship and the iron grip of ambitious nobles. The boy-king who once commanded a nation found himself increasingly isolated, his authority systematically dismantled by those around him.

By 1399, Richard’s grip on power had shattered completely. Deposed and imprisoned at Pontefract Castle, the fallen king languished in captivity until his death on Valentine’s Day 1400, withering away from malnutrition—a stark symbol of his abandonment. His remains were quietly interred at King’s Langley Priory.

Richard’s tragic arc has captivated historians and dramatists for centuries, immortalized in Shakespeare’s soaring tragedy. He endures as the emblematic figure of medieval kingship undone—a cautionary tale about the collision between youthful idealism and ruthless power politics, where even a crown offered no protection against fate.
