Richard Leakey 1944 – 2022
Biography
Born into Kenya’s most storied scientific family, Richard Leakey became the globe’s preeminent detective of human origins. His fossil discoveries in the Turkana Basin rewrote the story of our ancestors, pushing back the timeline of human evolution and captivating the world with evidence of our deepest past. As a paleoanthropologist, he didn’t just study bones—he fundamentally altered how humanity understands itself.
Yet Leakey was never content in the lab. He transformed into conservation’s fiercest advocate, taking the helm of Kenya’s wildlife agencies to battle poaching and protect the nation’s irreplaceable ecosystems. His high-profile crusade against ivory trafficking made him a lightning rod, but also a conservation legend. He channeled that same fierce commitment into political life, bringing scientific rigor to public service.
For nearly eight decades, Leakey remained rooted in Nairobi, the city of his birth, wielding his intellect as both sword and shield—defending our evolutionary heritage and our natural world. His death in January 2022 marked the end of an era, though his fingerprints remain on paleoanthropology and African conservation forever.
