Biography

Richard Neville commanded the English political stage as one of the fifteenth century’s most formidable nobles. Born into privilege in 1428, he ascended to dual prominence through marriage and inheritance, claiming both the earldom of Warwick and the earldom of Salisbury—titles that positioned him among the kingdom’s elite power brokers during England’s most turbulent decades.

His influence rippled across the realm during an era of profound upheaval. Neville’s considerable lands and status granted him outsized sway over the nation’s volatile politics, where alliances shifted and ambitions clashed at the highest levels. He navigated the treacherous currents of medieval nobility with the acumen demanded of his rank, wielding his titles as instruments of consequence.

Neville’s life ended on April 23, 1471, in Barnet—a death befitting the tumultuous age he inhabited. He was laid to rest at Bisham Abbey with the ceremonial honors accorded to his station, leaving behind a legacy intertwined with one of medieval England’s most storied aristocratic families during their period of greatest influence.
