Biography

Robert Matsui spent nearly three decades as a powerful voice in Congress, representing Sacramento with fierce advocacy for civil rights and economic justice. First elected in 1978, the Japanese-American politician became a trailblazer in Washington, breaking barriers during an era when Asian-American representation remained rare. His career reached its peak as a senior Democratic leader on the House Ways and Means Committee, where he shaped critical trade and tax legislation that defined the late 20th century.

Beyond politics, Matsui’s legacy centered on his unwavering commitment to redressing historical injustices. He championed reparations for Japanese-American internment survivors—a deeply personal crusade given his own family’s experience during World War II. His voice carried moral weight in debates about immigration, workers’ rights, and economic opportunity. Matsui served his Sacramento constituency with distinction until his death from leukemia on New Year’s Day 2005, leaving behind a career that proved the power of persistence in pursuit of equality.
