Robert Walpole 1676 – 1745
Biography
He wasn’t a rock star or a silver screen idol—Robert Walpole commanded the stage of 18th-century British politics with the kind of power that made nations lean in. Rising from Norfolk gentry to become the 1st Earl of Orford, Walpole wielded influence that shaped an era. But what truly set him apart was his eye for genius: the man built one of Britain’s most formidable art collections, proving that political clout and refined taste weren’t mutually exclusive. His acquisitions weren’t just purchases—they were declarations of a cultured mind wielding serious authority.
Walpole never forgot where he came from. Houghton, the Norfolk village of his birth in 1676, remained his anchor throughout a dizzying rise through the corridors of power. He juggled state affairs with passionate collecting, amassing works that reflected both his discerning eye and his era’s cultural flowering. When he died on March 29, 1745, he returned home one final time—buried in St Martin at Tours’ Church in Houghton, the place where his remarkable journey had begun nearly seven decades before.
