Rutherford B. Hayes 1822 – 1893
Biography
From a small Delaware town to the nation’s highest office, Rutherford B. Hayes rose through public service to become the 19th President during one of America’s most turbulent periods. Taking the helm in 1877, Hayes stepped into a fractured nation still raw from civil war, tasked with steering the country toward reconciliation. His presidency, though brief at just four years, unfolded against the backdrop of Reconstruction’s end and the country’s painful search for unity.
Hayes spent his later years rooted in Fremont, Ohio, remaining deeply engaged with his community long after leaving the White House. A figure who embodied the complexities of his era, he witnessed America’s transformation across seven decades of sweeping historical change. On January 17, 1893, Hayes died of a heart attack at seventy, his life a testament to service during one of the nation’s most defining chapters. He rests alongside his wife, Lucy Webb Hayes, their tomb standing as a quiet monument to their shared journey through pivotal American history.
