Biography

Born in Mandalay in 1924, S. N. Goenka became the architect of a global meditation revolution, transforming vipassanā—an ancient Buddhist contemplative practice—from an obscure tradition into a worldwide movement. With quiet determination and pedagogical genius, he stripped the technique of cultural barriers and dogma, making it accessible to millions of seekers from every corner of the planet who craved authentic inner transformation.

For decades, Goenka operated as meditation’s unlikely evangelist, establishing centers and training teachers while maintaining an almost monastic commitment to preserving the practice’s integrity. His methodology proved remarkably effective: thousands attended his intensive ten-day courses, emerging as devoted practitioners and instructors themselves. Based in Mumbai during his later years, he orchestrated an intricate network of meditation centers that would outlive him.

When Goenka died in 2013 at age 89, he left behind not just devoted students but an institutional infrastructure that continues expanding his vision. His greatest achievement wasn’t merely teaching meditation—it was democratizing enlightenment itself, proving that ancient wisdom could flourish in the modern world.
