Shinzō Abe 1954 – 2022
Biography
Japan’s longest-serving prime minister in modern history, Shinzō Abe dominated the nation’s political landscape across two non-consecutive terms, first from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020. His second stint proved transformative, as Abe spearheaded “Abenomics”—an aggressive economic revitalization strategy combining monetary stimulus, fiscal spending, and structural reforms—positioning Japan as a tech and diplomatic powerhouse on the global stage. He championed constitutional reform, strengthened military ties with the West, and navigated complex relationships with China and North Korea.
On July 8, 2022, Abe was assassinated by gunshot while campaigning in Nara, shocking a nation where political violence is virtually unknown. His sudden death at age 67 robbed Japan of its most influential political figure and sent ripples through international politics. Laid to rest at Kirigaya Funeral Hall in Shinagawa, Abe left behind a legacy as the architect of modern Japan’s resurgence and a towering presence whose influence extended far beyond his time in office.
