Biography

Slimane of Morocco was born on January 1, 1766, in Fez, a city long considered the intellectual and spiritual heart of the kingdom. Rising to prominence during a complex period in Moroccan history, he would eventually ascend to the position of Sultan, holding significant authority over the North African realm during the early nineteenth century.

During his reign, Slimane navigated the challenges facing Morocco as European powers expanded their influence across the Mediterranean and beyond. His leadership spanned a transformative era for the sultanate, as he worked to maintain stability within his domains and preserve Morocco’s independence during uncertain times.

Slimane spent his final years in Marrakech, another of Morocco’s great imperial cities, where he died on November 28, 1822. His life encompassed fifty-six years of Moroccan history, from the reign of his predecessors through his own tenure as Sultan. Though specific details of his later life remain limited in historical records, his role as a Moroccan ruler during this pivotal period secured his place in the nation’s past.
