Svend Foyn 1809 – 1894
Biography
Svend Foyn was born on July 9, 1809, in Tønsberg, a port town with a rich maritime heritage along Norway’s southeastern coast. Growing up in this seafaring community, he would become deeply connected to the ocean and its resources. Over the course of his lifetime, Foyn devoted himself to whaling, an occupation that shaped much of his identity and work during the nineteenth century.
His career as a whaler placed him among those who pursued one of Norway’s most significant maritime industries during this era. Throughout his years at sea and in the whaling trade, Foyn contributed to an occupation that was vital to Norwegian commerce and culture. He lived a long life, witnessing tremendous changes across Norway and the wider world throughout the 1800s.
On November 30, 1894, Foyn passed away in Nøtterøy, in his final years having lived near his native region. He was laid to rest in Tønsberg’s old churchyard, returning to the soil of the community where his life had begun nearly eighty-five years earlier. Foyn’s memory endures as part of Norway’s whaling heritage and maritime history.
