Biography

Syngman Rhee emerged as the architect of modern South Korea, commanding the nation’s presidency during its most vulnerable years—1948 to 1960—when a fledgling state had to forge its identity on a divided peninsula. Born in 1875 during Korea’s turbulent transformation, Rhee became the towering political figure who steered the young republic through Cold War pressures and the monumental task of nation-building from scratch. His leadership during these formative decades essentially wrote the blueprint for contemporary South Korea.

Rhee’s presidency became synonymous with South Korea’s survival and establishment as an independent state. Operating amid the geopolitical tensions of a fractured peninsula and global superpowers, he worked to construct the governmental infrastructure and national institutions that would define the country’s trajectory for generations to come. His ninety years spanned one of history’s most dramatic transformations in East Asia.

The statesman died of a stroke in Honolulu on July 19, 1965, at age ninety. He was laid to rest at Seoul National Cemetery, a final resting place befitting his towering role in Korean history.
