Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset 1536 – 1608
Biography
Thomas Sackville was born on January 1, 1536, in Worthing, beginning a life that would span more than seven decades and touch the highest circles of English society. Over his long lifetime, he distinguished himself through multiple pursuits, establishing himself as both a skilled politician and accomplished poet during a transformative period in English history.
His contributions to literature and public service left an enduring mark on his era. As a poet, Sackville participated in the vibrant intellectual life of sixteenth-century England, while his political career demonstrated his value to the realm’s governance. These dual accomplishments reflect the Renaissance ideal of the educated gentleman equally at home in the study and the halls of power.
Thomas Sackville remained active throughout his life, eventually rising to the earldom of Dorset—a title reflecting his prominence and the trust placed in him by the Crown. He passed away on April 19, 1608, in London, at an advanced age that testified to his vigorous constitution. His final resting place was chosen to be The church of St Michael and All Angels in Withyham, where his memory was preserved among the stones and faithful of that sacred space.
