Biography

Timothy Dexter was born on February 22, 1747, in Malden, Massachusetts, during a formative period in American colonial history. Though his early circumstances remain modest in the historical record, Dexter would go on to establish himself as a prominent figure in late eighteenth-century New England, earning recognition both as a shrewd businessman and as an author.

Throughout his life, Dexter pursued ventures in commerce that would make him a notable merchant of his era. His business acumen and willingness to take calculated risks set him apart among his contemporaries, allowing him to build wealth and influence in the bustling port communities of Massachusetts.

Beyond his mercantile achievements, Dexter distinguished himself through his written work, contributing to the intellectual life of early America. His decision to commit his thoughts and experiences to print reflected an uncommon ambition for a self-made man of his generation.

Dexter died on October 23, 1806, in Newburyport, Massachusetts, at the age of fifty-nine. He was laid to rest at Old Burial Hill in Marblehead, where his grave remains a quiet testament to a life marked by enterprise and literary aspiration during the nation’s early years.
