Biography

Uryū Sotokichi rose through Japan’s naval ranks to become one of the nation’s most influential military leaders during a pivotal era of modernization and imperial expansion. Born in 1857 in Daishōji Domain, he navigated the treacherous waters of late Meiji-era politics, translating his naval authority into significant political influence. His career spanned the transformation of Japan from an isolated feudal society into a major Pacific power, making him a central figure in shaping the country’s twentieth-century trajectory.

Beyond the admiral’s quarters, Uryū proved himself a savvy political operator, wielding considerable sway in government circles during Japan’s most transformative decades. His dual expertise—military strategy and political acumen—positioned him as an indispensable voice in national affairs. When he passed away in 1937 in Odawara at eighty years old, Uryū left behind a legacy etched into Japan’s modern identity, honored with his final resting place at the prestigious Aoyama Cemetery in Tokyo.
