Vlad II Dracul

Biography

Vlad II Dracul ruled Wallachia during one of Eastern Europe’s most turbulent periods, navigating a treacherous landscape where Ottoman expansion threatened from the south and local nobles circled for power. Born in 1395 into a region perpetually caught between empires, he became a symbol of medieval Wallachian leadership during an era when survival itself was a political strategy. His reign demanded the kind of diplomatic cunning and military acumen that only a prince wedged between superpowers could master.

Little survives about Dracul’s specific policies, but his role as Wallachia’s ruling prince made him a pivotal figure in the fifteenth-century Balkans. He spent his life brokering impossible compromises, keeping his principality afloat amid the colliding interests of regional powers. When he died in 1447 at fifty-two, he was buried at Dealu Monastery—a testament to the spiritual traditions that anchored Wallachian nobility even amid constant political chaos.

His legacy rippled forward through his descendants, who would become far more legendary. But Vlad II himself remained the architect of survival, the prince who kept a small nation standing when empires were reshaping the map.
