Wheeler Vivian Oakman 1890 – 1949
Biography
Wheeler Vivian Oakman was born on February 21, 1890, in Washington, D.C., during a transformative era in American entertainment. He would go on to establish himself as a notable presence in the early motion picture industry, working as an actor during the silent film era—a pioneering period when cinema was still finding its artistic voice and reaching audiences across the nation.
Throughout his career in silent film, Oakman contributed to the emerging art form during its formative years, a time when actors helped define what cinema could be. The silent screen demanded particular skills of physical expression and pantomime, disciplines in which Oakman developed his craft.
On March 19, 1949, Oakman passed away in Van Nuys, California, at the age of fifty-eight, having suffered a myocardial infarction. He was laid to rest at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, where he remains. Though the era of silent cinema has long passed into history, Oakman’s contributions to those early days of film remain part of Hollywood’s legacy.
