Biography

Born into a new nation in 1807, Wilford Woodruff became one of the defining religious figures of nineteenth-century America. Rising through the ranks of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Woodruff eventually claimed the church’s highest office as President, steering the organization through its most turbulent decades. His nearly ninety-one-year life spanned from Thomas Jefferson’s presidency to the modern industrial age—a remarkable arc that made him a living bridge between America’s founding era and the twentieth century.

Woodruff’s nearly century-long tenure in religious leadership left an indelible mark on his faith community and the American West. His unwavering commitment transformed him into a towering figure whose decisions rippled across generations of followers. When he died in Salt Lake City on September 2, 1898, the church lost not just a leader but a historical monument—a man whose lifetime of service defined an entire religious movement’s trajectory through America’s most transformative period.
