Biography
Wilhelm Keitel rose through the ranks of the German military to become one of the nation’s most powerful field marshals, wielding enormous influence across decades of armed forces leadership. Born in the small town of Helmscherode in 1882, Keitel’s military career placed him at the center of some of the most consequential—and controversial—moments of twentieth-century European history.
Keitel’s life ended dramatically on October 16, 1946, when he was executed by hanging at Nuremberg Court Prison, a stark conclusion to a career defined by military command during one of history’s darkest chapters. His remains were later interred in Wenzbach, Germany, where he was laid to rest.
