Wilhelm Ohnesorge 1872 – 1962
Biography
Wilhelm Ohnesorge lived through nearly a century of European upheaval, from the German Empire through two world wars to the Federal Republic’s reconstruction. Born in 1872 in Gräfenhainichen, he came of age during imperial Germany’s final decades, then navigated the Weimar period and beyond. His career became deeply embedded in Nazi Germany’s governmental machinery, where he served as a minister during the Third Reich—a position that made him a fixture in one of history’s darkest chapters.
Ohnesorge’s ninety years carried him from the horse-drawn world of the 1870s to the atomic age, witnessing transformations that reshaped the continent. He died in Munich in 1962, having survived the regime’s collapse and lived through Germany’s fractured rebirth. His longevity made him an inadvertent witness to the twentieth century’s most consequential upheavals, though his legacy remains intertwined with the historical complexities of the era he served.
