Biography

Yegor Letov was a singular force in Russian culture—a Siberian artist who refused conventional categories. Born in Omsk in 1964, this multidisciplinary creative moved fluidly between music, poetry, and visual art during one of history’s most turbulent periods. His work captured the raw complexity of late-Soviet and post-Soviet life, speaking to audiences who craved authenticity amid upheaval.

What made Letov unforgettable was his refusal to play by any rules but his own. Operating across interconnected artistic disciplines, he became a cultural touchstone, bringing a distinctly Siberian sensibility to the broader Russian artistic conversation. His output—songs, verses, paintings—created a singular aesthetic voice that resonated far beyond underground circles.

Letov died in February 2008 in his beloved Omsk at just 43, claimed by acute respiratory insufficiency. He left behind a rich creative legacy that continues to influence artists who value fearless self-expression and artistic integrity. His Siberian roots ran deep—born there, he stayed there, and he remains there still.
