Zizi Jeanmaire 1924 – 2020
Biography
Born in Paris’s 14th arrondissement in 1924, Zizi Jeanmaire became a singular force in twentieth-century French entertainment—a dancer, choreographer, and singer who refused to be confined by a single art form. Her chameleonic talent allowed her to command stages across multiple disciplines, making her a fixture of Parisian cultural life for nearly a century.
Jeanmaire’s versatility was her calling card. While many performers excelled in one medium, she moved fluidly between ballet, theatrical choreography, and song, each discipline enriching the others. This rare ability to captivate audiences across different performance styles cemented her as a distinctive voice in mid-century French culture, influencing generations of entertainers who followed.
When Jeanmaire died in July 2020 at an advanced age, Paris honored one of its own. Laid to rest at Montparnasse Cemetery, she returned to the 14th arrondissement where her extraordinary journey began—a full-circle ending for an artist who never stopped performing.
