Kiro Gligorov 1917 – 2012
Biography
Born in the Macedonian city of Štip in 1917, Kiro Gligorov became the defining political force of modern Macedonia, steering the nation through one of history’s most turbulent transformations. As President of the Republic of Macedonia, Gligorov navigated the collapse of Yugoslavia and the birth of an independent state, cementing himself as the architect of his nation’s survival during its most precarious chapter. His decades-long commitment to Macedonian sovereignty and stability left an indelible mark on the Balkans.
Throughout the twentieth century, Gligorov witnessed Macedonia’s metamorphosis firsthand—from Yugoslav republic to independent nation—and shaped nearly every pivotal moment along the way. Based in Skopje, he became the steady hand guiding his people through geopolitical upheaval and international uncertainty. When Gligorov passed away on January 1, 2012, at age ninety-four, Macedonia lost a towering figure whose lifespan essentially mirrored the nation’s modern journey. He was laid to rest at Butel cemetery, remembered as the visionary who gave his country its voice.
