Alexander Cartwright was born on April 17, 1820, in New York City during a transformative era in American recreation and sport. Though details of his early life remain sparse, Cartwright would become known as an influential figure in the development of baseball during the nineteenth century. His contributions to the sport emerged during a pivotal time when various informal games were evolving into standardized athletic competitions.
