Georges Couthon 1755 – 1794
Biography
Georges Couthon rose to prominence as a legal mind who channeled his considerable intellect into the revolutionary fervor sweeping 1790s France. Born in the provincial town of Orcet in 1755, he transformed from provincial lawyer into a fiery political operative, becoming one of the Revolution’s most influential voices during its most radical phase. His passionate advocacy and legal acumen made him a central figure in the ideological battles that defined the era.
Yet Couthon’s meteoric ascent ended as dramatically as it had begun. On July 28, 1794, he was executed by decapitation during the Reign of Terror’s final, desperate days—a victim of the very revolutionary violence he had once championed. His body was interred at Errancis Cemetery in Paris, a stark reminder of how completely the Revolution consumed its own architects. Couthon’s brief, intense life encapsulates the era’s seductive promise and catastrophic human cost.
