Nikephoros II Orsini 1328 – 1359
Biography
Nikephoros II Orsini was born on January 1, 1328, into a family whose name would become synonymous with the rule of Epirus. As a member of the distinguished Orsini house, he inherited both privilege and responsibility during one of the medieval Balkans’ most turbulent periods. His early life unfolded during an era of significant political transformation in the region he would come to govern.
Nikephoros served as Despot of Epirus during two distinct periods of his life: first from 1335 to 1340, when he was still in his youth, and again from 1356 until his death in 1359. These appointments reflect the complex political dynamics of the time, when power shifted among competing interests and families. His role as Despot represented one of the highest honors available in the Byzantine world, positioning him as a significant figure in regional governance and diplomacy.
His life concluded on January 1, 1359, at the Achelous River—a poignant coincidence that his final day fell on the same date as his birth thirty-one years earlier. Though details of the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, his passing marked the end of a life devoted to the administration and protection of his realm during challenging times.
