Biography

Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard commanded attention as one of the Confederacy’s most prominent military figures during the Civil War. The Louisiana-born general rose to prominence through his strategic leadership across multiple theaters of conflict, earning a place in the historical record as a consequential—if controversial—player in America’s bloodiest chapter.

Born in 1818 in St. Bernard Parish, Beauregard carried the weight of his region’s complex legacy throughout his life. After the war’s end, he remained rooted in New Orleans, the city that anchored his identity for decades. He witnessed extraordinary transformation across his nearly seventy-five years—from antebellum prosperity through devastating conflict and into Reconstruction’s uncertain years.

Beauregard died of cardiovascular disease in February 1893, his long life spanning nearly the entire nineteenth century. He was buried at Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans, among other prominent figures from Louisiana’s storied past, his grave a physical marker of a contested historical legacy.
