Biography

Born into the oil-boom ferment of 1876 Baku, Meshadi Azizbekov emerged as a committed Soviet revolutionary during one of history’s most explosive decades. He channeled the radical idealism of his era into active work within the revolutionary movement, becoming a fixture in the political ferment that defined the early Soviet period and shaped the Caucasus region’s turbulent transformation.

Azizbekov’s life was a casualty of the chaos he helped ignite. On September 20, 1918—just 42 years old—he was killed by gunshot in Türkmenbaşy during the brutal civil conflict that consumed the years following the Russian Revolution. His death exemplified the violent toll exacted on revolutionary figures caught in the maelstrom of political upheaval sweeping through the former Russian empire.

Today, Azizbekov remains an emblematic figure in the legacy of Azerbaijani revolutionaries who sacrificed everything during the region’s most transformative—and most dangerous—era.
