Biography

Born into a modest life in ‘Arura in 1966, Saleh al-Arouri ascended through the ranks to become one of Hamas’s most influential strategists and senior leaders. Over more than five decades, he shaped organizational policy and strategy, positioning himself as a key architect of initiatives that extended the group’s reach across the region. His long career made him a defining figure in Palestinian political movements, commanding respect and attention far beyond Gaza’s borders.

Al-Arouri’s prominence grew as he navigated some of the Middle East’s most volatile decades, building influence through organizational work that kept him at the center of regional power dynamics. His role evolved across multiple phases of conflict and political negotiation, cementing his status as a consequential player in Palestinian politics and strategy.

On January 2, 2024, a drone strike in Beirut’s Dahyeh neighborhood ended al-Arouri’s life, cutting short a career that had spanned generations of regional upheaval. He was buried at Beirut’s Martyrs’ Cemetery—a final placement that underscored the profound complexities of his contested legacy in the Middle East’s enduring political struggles.
